German scientist, visionary innovator, engineer and inventor, designer and entrepreneur
Holder of multiple degrees, awarded the academic distinction of Visiting Professor conferred by the University Council of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano (Peru)
Plus X Lifetime Achievement Award 2019
Founder of X-Technology Swiss R&D AG, X-SOCKS®, X-BIONIC®, Swiss Intellectual Properties & Licensing AG and APANI® – As Pure As Nature Intended®

His education took shape between South Africa and Europe, with three degrees: in engineering, in marketing and communication, and in psychology. It is a rare combination, uniting the precision of those who design matter, the ability to turn an invention into a brand, and an understanding of how human beings perceive the world.
This path is complemented by the academic distinction of Visiting Professor of the Faculty of Economic Engineering, conferred on him by the University Council, the senior governing body of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Peru, and entered in the university’s register of notable events.

Since then he has worked on innovation projects across several continents, bringing the same curiosity to every context: understanding how things work, and how they could work better.

From this foundation, he turned a simple principle into a method: every idea begins with the observation of reality.

A finger pressed against the cheek turns the skin white – and becomes a study of blood flow and compression. A drop of saliva on the forehead cools instantly – and raises a question no one had asked: why does sportswear throw away sweat, the most efficient cooling system of the human body? The skin of desert reptiles, able to retain and channel moisture, suggests the answer.

This is bionics: learning from nature to take technology beyond its limits.

It all began with a sock.
To a manufacturer squeezed by price competition, Prof. Dr. Lambertz did not propose a new campaign, but a new product: X-SOCKS®, with channels that circulate air around the foot. That sock gave rise to new structures for shirts, trousers and jackets, and ultimately to X-BIONIC®, apparel that uses sweat to regulate body temperature. Decades of research on synthetic fibres then led to a more radical question: what if the most advanced technology could live within the materials nature has already perfected? From this question APANI® was born – the synthesis of all his work. Natural fibres become functional, wool becomes intelligent, and engineering is placed at the service of nature.

ONE SCIENTIST, MANY WORLDS

For Prof. Dr. Lambertz, the method knows no industry boundaries. A single question – “how would nature solve this problem?” – has guided the team that has worked alongside him for years towards developments in very different fields: from technical textiles to functional nutrition, from body care to surface treatment technologies, and on to protective fabrics for motorsport and base layers for aerospace. The fields change; the process does not: observe, understand, patent, and turn the idea into a product.

SOUND AS NATURE INTENDED IT

Sound is perhaps the field in which his method finds its purest expression. With APANI Audiophile, Prof. Dr. Lambertz brings to listening the question that has guided all his research, as an engineer and as a student of perception: what do human beings truly perceive? Just as the skin has no need to rid itself of sweat, the ear has no need for numbers. It is a biological instrument, evolved to recognise the truth of a voice, the breath of a violin, the space of a concert hall.

This is how the APANI Music Transformers came to be: active systems, coherent in time and phase, fine-tuned in real listening environments and built by hand. They do not reproduce sound – they restore music, with its presence, its space and its emotion.

From IONA to Cylindra, every system is conceived as a single instrument, in which technology disappears and only the music remains.

CERTIFIED INNOVATION

In Switzerland he founded X-Technology Swiss R&D AG and Swiss Intellectual Properties & Licensing AG, think tanks in which engineers, biologists, physicians and athletes work together to imagine what does not yet exist.

The value of this work has been certified by independent assessments based on the most objective measure of innovation: patents.

In 2020 the Schweizer Institut für Qualitätstests (SIQT) analysed the patent activity of Swiss companies over the three years 2017–2019, by number of patents and by the relevance of their citations. X-Technology Swiss R&D AG received the “Future made in Switzerland” Innovation Award with the distinction “Best in its Class – Leading Innovator” for its patent portfolio in sports apparel and equipment.

In 2026 the same institute awarded the SIQT Innovation Award to Swiss Intellectual Properties & Licensing AG, owner of the APANI® trademark, with the title “Swiss Leading Innovator – Award Winner Innovation Performance”, placing it among the most innovative companies in Switzerland for patent performance.

Two companies, years apart, united by the same method.

AWARD-WINNING INNOVATION

The technologies developed under his leadership are based on more than 800 patent applications filed worldwide. Including trademarks and designs, the intellectual property rights generated over decades of intense activity exceed 3,000.

The products born from his ideas have received more than 700 international awards, including more than 100 Plus X Awards, more than 54 iF Design Awards and more than 41 Red Dot Design Awards.

X-BIONIC®, the brand he founded, was named “Most Innovative Brand” by the Plus X Award for thirteen consecutive years under his leadership, from 2009 to 2021.

In November 2021 the group was sold: today X-BIONIC® and X-SOCKS® are under different ownership, but the technologies that made them famous bear his signature, and his method lives on in APANI®.

The same rigour is rewarded in APANI® today. In 2023 the Plus X Award honoured the brand with the titles “Most Innovative Brand” and “Food Innovator”, confirming that Prof. Dr. Lambertz’s method expresses itself with equal strength in textiles and in nutrition. The full list of APANI awards is available on the Awards page.

Finally, in 2019 the Plus X Award presented Prof. Dr. Lambertz with the Lifetime Achievement Award, conferred for the seventh time in its history. Previous recipients Sir James Dyson, Amar G. Bose, Noel Lee, Peter Skak Olufsen, Hartmut Esslinger, Dieter Burmester.

CONTINUITY

Today this legacy is alive in the market. Prof. Dr. Lambertz is supported by a team he selected himself: young, yet already rich in experience gained under his guidance. To lead APANI AG he chose as CEO the engineer Sabrina Salvadori, who has worked alongside him for fifteen years. A civil engineer and inventor with patents in her own name, she shares his scientific background and his rigour. In her role she embodies the continuity of a method that has always turned ideas into products.

APANI® – As Pure As Nature Intended® is the culmination of this vision: pure materials, logical design, functional details, unadulterated food and zero waste. It is a system of values even before it is a brand – one that Prof. Dr. Lambertz continues to nourish with his research and that his team brings to the world every day.

X-SOCKS® and X-BIONIC® are registered trademarks of their respective owners.
